Award Winning Filmmaker, Tony Ducret Takes His Newest Thriller I Can Smoke? To The Cannes Film Festival

“I Can Smoke?” an 18-minute short film directed by award winning Writer/Director Tony Ducret will appear in the Short Film Corner section of the 2012 Cannes Film Festival.
Cannes, France May 18, 2012 – “I Can Smoke?” an 18-minute short film directed by award winning Writer/Director Tony Ducret will appear in the Short Film Corner section of the 2012 Cannes Film Festival.“I Can Smoke?” is the story of Ethan Schwartz, a doting husband who decides to call a prostitute to help him pass the evening, when his wife goes away on a work trip. When Carmen arrives, she is everything that Ethan could have hoped for. However, when a sudden confusing development forces Ethan to abort his plan, Carmen refuses to leave the apartment. The tension escalates as Ethan considers all of the viable ways to change Carmen’s mind.

“I Can Smoke?” is a modern pulp thriller, set in and shot in New York City. In tone, it is something like an episode of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” gone horribly wrong. “I Can Smoke?” is a quintessentially New York story, featuring New York performers, and created, top to bottom, by a crew of amazingly talented New Yorkers.

Writer/Director Tony Ducret, has handled the subject with great finesse and cinematic edge. The film features NAACP Award winning Broadway and Television actress Erica Ash in the leading role of Carmen, the escort, and she lends the character much depth with her multi-layered and daring performance. Scott Casper appears opposite Erica, delivering an honest and explosive performance as Ethan Schwartz, the philandering husband. Upcoming actress Xosha Roquemore from Lee Daniels’ “Precious”, and Sundance hit “Price Check”, also makes a striking and sensual appearance as Shirley, the Madame. The film is visually lush with some remarkable cinematography by veteran Director of Photography, Salvador Bolivar. The compositions and the lighting beautifully capture the mood of the story.

With critical accolades for his previous micro-budget feature, Hospitality, and the great reception to his previous, award winning, short film, Jackpot, there are great expectations for Writer/Director Tony Ducret.
